Spanish Dance
Carmen Romero is a flamenco artist who in forty years continues fosters
relationships with audiences, students and fellow colleagues through the art of
flamenco. As Artistic Director of Compañía Carmen Romero and the School of
Flamenco Dance Arts based in Toronto, Canada, founded 1992, her moto,
“Discover your passion” describes her work well. Known for creating a foundation
for teaching flamenco as a language of expression she gives participants the
tools to train the mind body and soul to discover their personal best, be it for
recreation or profession.
Michael Crabb, Toronto Star says “she delivers flamenco with a raw immediacy
that is far closer to the source than a lot of the theatrical Spanish dance passed
off as authentic.” Her work has garnished many awards such as: Chalmers
Award, K.M Hunter Emerging Artists Award, Dora Nomination for best
choreography and Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement in
dance. Currently, Carmen is creating a work “Jacinto” that takes her well beyond
her comfort zone. World Premier is set for Toronto 2017.
Highlights of Carmen Romero’s career include coaching Latin Pop star “Shakira”,
competing with her Canadian ensemble, at the 9th Annual Certamen de
Coreogrfia de Danza Espanola y Flamenco in Madrid, Spain as well as a guest
artist at the Festival internacional de las Castanuelas in Girona, Spain. Tours in
Europe, Asian and North America has recognized Carmen as an international
flamenco dancer and choreographer, “she truly belongs to the history of
flamenco in a way not easily achieved”…Dance International.
